Essential Oils for Sleep Disorders

There are many causes of insomnia and poor sleep quality. The usual culprits are problems, stress, and depression.

These are all common issues of just about everyone and everywhere. Sleep disorders are definitely bothersome. It’s either unable to sleep, lack of sleep, or inability to have continouous sleep — other people have all of these problems.

Good thing there are plenty of viable solutions to remedy sleep disorders — and one of the more highly suggested is the use of essential oils.

Healing herbal oils have been famous since ancient times. They are known to promote healing, calmness, and relief against anxieties and stress.

Lavender Oil

This very popular essential oil has a soothing scent, and plenty of health benefits whether it is for physical, mental, and emotional wellness. It is a mood enhancer as it alleviates stress and depression. Because of such effects, it can help you put in a better mood for sleep.

Lavender oil as a sleeping treatment is usually mixed with clary sage, geranium, and ylangylang in a spray bottle of distilled water. Spray the mixture in your room and you should be feeling more comfortable and relaxed.

You might even fall asleep without knowing it.

Catnip Oil

This is a minty herbal oil which relaxes the mind to beat insomnia, tension and stress. This aromatic oil quiets your nerves and promotes restful sleep by simply breathing in its minty scent.

Kava Kava Root Oil

The root is known as “South Pacific Soother” because of its properties to resolve restlessness and treat sleeping problems.

The Kava Kava extract can be consumed by mouth. But caution should be applied and it is important that one should seek the guidance of an aromatherapist for proper blending and dosage.

Rose Oil

This oil with a very pleasant floral scent has been used in different health and beauty products — such as body lotions, night creams and perfumes — because of its skin benefits.

In aromatherapy, it is used as a natural sedative to destress the body and mind, thus it will lull you to sleep. It is also used as a massage oil to soothe tensed muscles.

Chamomile Oil

Chamomile oil has a slight sedative effect as it gently calms your nerves and removes stress during your massage therapy.

You can also brew chamomile oil tea and drink 45 minutes to an hour before going to sleep.

Frankincense

This is actually an all-around essential oil. It has been used in a variety of religious ceremonies.

It is an aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes. It reduces negative emotions that can keep you up at night.

It is known to have a natural scent which opens your airways, allowing your body to breathe smoothly. The improved breathing permits your whole system to relax and eventually let you fall asleep.

To apply, simply place 3 drops of frankincense to the palms of your hands and rub them along the bottoms of your feet.

Cedarwood Oil

It is the oil from a tree bark, but with many health benefits. It reduces skin irritations, improves focus and memory, and acts as a sedative.

It has stress and tension-reducing properties, thus it relaxes muscles. It stimulates the production of serotonin which is then converted to melatonin in the brain. It is the melatonin then that calms you and induces sleep.

To use, five drops of cedarwood oil is mixed with ten drops eucalyptus oil onto your hands, rub palms together and breathe in deeply the aroma of the mixture.
