Effective Homemade Dyes for White/Grey Hair

Your hair begins to lose its dark color once melanocytes slow down or stop injecting melanin around your hair follicle. That’s how one starts to have white or grey hair.

What does grey hair mean to you?

The decrease in the melanin production are caused by several factors; age, genetics, chemical changes, diet, stress and chemical-based hair colors containing ammonia.

White or grey hair may either terrify you… or you may not even care (good for you then).

For those who worry a lot, especially women, they tend to go for ready-to-use solutions to cover up white hair.

But then, chemical hair dyes are not safe to use. They may cause several scalp and hair reactions which can ultimately harm you.

To help maintain your black hair, we suggest these homemade hair dye recipes. These can even be used to stimulate the production of melanin.

Natural Homemade Dyes

Black Tea

This is the simplest hair blackening recipe with only two ingredients needed: 2 tablespoons black tea leaves and water.

Method 1: Brew tea leaves in 200ml water, strain, cool down and apply on hair for 1-2 hours after shampoo.

Method 2: Soak black tea leaves for 2 hours in warm water, grind to make a smooth paste, add lemon juice and apply as hair mask. Let it stay for 40 minutes. Rinse.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has long been known to make hair strong, shiny, and beautiful. If mixed with other organic products, like lemon juice and curry, it will naturally create a reaction which prevents whitening of hair.

Coconut oil and Lemon juice: Mix coconut oil (amount enough to cover your hair) with 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice. Then, gently massage the mixture unto your scalp and leave for an hour. Wash with mild shampoo.

Coconut oil and Curry leaves: Boil curry leaves in coconut oil. Strain leaves and allow mixture to cool down. Massage the coconut oil-curry mixture on your scalp and leave for an hour before washing with mild shampoo or soap.

Sage Leaves

Sage is an herbal leaves which is effective in stopping the growth of grey hair and restores natural hair color.

Boil, preferably, black sage leaves in water. Cool down and apply on hair and scalp. Leave on for 2 hours then wash with mild shampoo or soap. Repeat for few weeks for visible results.

Henna and Other Herbs

Henna is a long time natural hair dye. It is safe and easily available.

Mix 1 cup henna powder with coffee powder (desired amount), 1 tablespoon each of curd, lemon juice, catechu, brahmi, Indian gooseberry and dry mint powder in a plastic, wooden or any stainless bowl.

Add vinegar to make a thick paste. Let mixture sit for two hours.

Apply on your hair and leave for an hour. Rinse your hair to remove dye completely with water.

Black Sesame Seed

Unhulled and black sesame seeds retain most of the nutrients, especially Vitamin B, which will reduce  hair loss and turn white hair black.

Simply soak sesame seeds in water until soft. Then, mash them with a food processor or any other available kitchen tools you have to mash them, to make a paste.

Apply on scalp and hair with a gentle massage. Leave for at least an hour and rinse.

Other Remedies

Aside from what mentioned above to help you cover your grey hair in a safe and natural way, there are relevant remedies you can adapt. Examples of which are:

  1. Have a balanced diet – foods rich in vitamin B and E, to delay the whitening process of your hair. Also, lessen your intake of sodium for it speeds up the appearance of white hair.
  2. Drink lots of water.
  3. Avoid junk foods.
  4. Massage your scalp to stimulate melanin and keratin production.
